Henri Van Melle

Henri Van Melle

Gent 1859 - 1930

Henri Van Melle studied at the Royal Academy of Ghent where he would later be appointed as a professor. He is to be situated in the group around the young Latem artists such as Constant Permeke, Léon De Smet or Albert Servaes. Together with other students of the Academy he occupied the St. Elisabeth Beguinage after 1874. His oeuvre shows much variety, yet never leaves the path of Emile Claus’ luminism. It is characterised by realistic scenes and sunny landscapes as well as intimate and even orientalist themes.
