Pieter Gorus was born in Dendermonde on February 23, 1881 as the son of the local textile manufacturer and later mayor of Wanzele. He spent the first year of his life in Dendermonde. He enrolled in engineering studies in Leuven, but quit after two years to start taking lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dendermonde.
