Pieter Gorus

Dendermonde 1881 - 1941

Pieter Gorus was born in Dendermonde on February 23, 1881 as the son of the local textile manufacturer and later mayor of Wanzele. He spent the first year of his life in Dendermonde. He enrolled in engineering studies in Leuven, but quit after two years to start taking lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dendermonde.

Pieter Gorus moved to a house with a spacious studio in Zele Dijk. Here he would fully develop into a successful landscape painter whose realistic and impressionistic painted works received rave reviews both at home and overseas. He also illustrated several books , including those of his friend Karel Van de Woestijne. In 1908 Pieter Gorus was appointed as a teacher at the Academy of Dendermonde.
